QUESTION 4: REPRESENTATION AMONG TEACHING STAFF
State data indicate that Melrose has no Black teachers.
This is a loss for all of our students.
However, it is especially concerning for the 6% of our student body that is Black, because studies show that when Black students have Black teachers they are less likely to miss school and be suspended, and more likely to thrive academically and aspire to college.
At past forums, candidates have suggested a range of solutions, including creating pipelines from paraprofessional to teacher roles, partnering with universities, improving recruitment outreach, and addressing Melrose's below-average teacher pay.
However, these ideas have not yet translated into specific, time-bound commitments from city leaders.
What percentage goal for Black teachers would you set for the city to achieve in the next three years?
What accountability measures do you support if the goal is not met?
